Of all God's creations one stands out as the most blessed. Only one creature has a unique relationship with God which is more intimate then any other. As Elizabeth exclaimed to Mary, "Blessed are you among women," and Mary herself exclaimed, "Henceforth all generations will call me blessed." No creature is closer to God than the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The three most intimate relationships a woman can have with another being are daughter, spouse, and mother. Unlike any other, Mary has all three of these relationships with our One and Holy God. We share with Mary the first relationship to God, as we are all sons and daughters of God the Father. However, Mary was chosen for the single most important role, that one of us would take, in salvation history. Mary was chosen as the instrument to give human form to God the Son. As the angel Gabriel said, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you." Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit, thereby becoming the ever virgin spouse of God the Holy Spirit. Like Mary, we too will have the relationship of spouse to God. When Christ takes his bride, the Church, we too will be his spouse. Until that time, only Mary has this relationship to God.
But it is as mother that Mary has the most unique and intimate relationship to God the Son. Mothers in general are closer to God than any other creature. As the late Cardinal Mindszenty said of mothers, "The most important person on earth. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has build something more magnificent than any Cathedral - a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby's body." How much more important Mary, as "the tiny perfection of her baby's body" is that of Almighty God.
God wishes that we too have this relationship to Mary. Jesus said to his mother from the cross, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then he said to us, the disciples he loved, "Behold, your mother!" We become Jesus' brothers and sisters both by God our father and by Mary our mother.
We should join the angel Gabriel and Elizabeth in exclaiming, "Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among woman, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus." Then we should ask our mother, "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death."
